5 Great Waffle Toppings

5 Great Waffle Toppings

As I read more about Liege waffles and how they differ from the waffles we often see in American diners, I’m amazed at how much of an anytime snack these waffles are. Instead of being served at breakfast and topped with syrup and butter, true Liege waffles are grab and go, requiring no additional sweetening. So what about those of us who just can’t get toppings out of our head and wish to jazz them?

Try  these five options as toppings:

1. Belgian chocolate

Everybody loves chocolate, or at least I do. Belgian chocolate can be found at most stores and can be warmed and drizzled on top of a waffle or used as a dipping sauce to add a little more kick to your waffle. Let it harden if you like the candy effect.

2. Fresh Fruit

Fresh fruit makes anything better. The same goes for waffles on the go. Fruit can be preared with a simple syrup of water and sugar and pour on top of the waffles, or simply place on the same dish. Whatever way you want to serve your fruit and waffles, the fruit adds both color and a nutritious spin for your snack.

3. Caramel

If chocolate and fruit doesn’t do the trick, caramel might. Warmed and poured over waffles, perhaps already sweetened with confectioners sugar will make your palate, and your children, happy. The caramel and pearl sugars of the waffle go well with each other and make this treat an all-time favorite.

4. Whipped Cream

“Would you like whipped cream on that?” is something we often hear as coffee shops, but whipped cream as a topping or dipping sauce can add a great layer to your waffle. Try it and let us know what you think.

5. Ice Cream

Ice cream has a history with waffles including pairing as a topping and with the flaky cousin of waffles, a waffle cone. Together with fresh fruit, caramel and chocolate, ice cream can make a smashing dessert with the waffle. Just don’t tell your dentist or dietician about this tasty treat.

Those are just a few things you can do to add variety to your waffle. Thinking of waffles  outside of a breakfast meal  may be a new concept for some, as it was for me, but thinking about how many other ways to enjoy this treat makes my mouth water. Off to grab me a bite!
