What’s the difference between Augustin’s Waffles® and Belgium Waffles?
The Belgium waffle that most Americans are familiar with is from the Brussels area of Belgium. It is plain and usually eaten for breakfast with butter and syrup or as a dessert with ice cream. Augustin’s Waffles® were developed in the Liege area of Belgium. Liege waffles are pre-sweetened with pearl sugar and have no artificial ingredients or preservatives. They are ready-to-eat and can be enjoyed anytime or anywhere.
Augustin's Waffles represent a cherished tradition that traces its roots to the Liege region of Belgium. Unlike the lighter, plainer Brussels waffle commonly found across America, the Liege waffle is distinguished by its use of pearl sugar, which caramelizes during baking to create a naturally sweet, crisp exterior while the interior remains soft and tender. This original Belgian recipe yields a waffle that needs no additional toppings, syrups, or butter to be enjoyed. The dough itself is enriched with butter and eggs, producing a bready, brioche-like texture that sets it apart from other waffle varieties. Every bite delivers an authentic taste of European craftsmanship.
What makes the Liege waffle truly special is its ready-to-eat convenience and versatility. These waffles are pre-sweetened through the pearl sugar method, meaning they contain no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or synthetic flavorings. They can be enjoyed straight from the package as a quick snack, gently warmed for a fresh-from-the-oven experience, or incorporated into creative desserts and breakfast dishes. Whether you are a busy professional looking for a morning treat, a parent seeking wholesome snacks for children, or a food enthusiast exploring European delicacies, the Liege waffle fits seamlessly into any occasion. Its durability also makes it an excellent choice for on-the-go enjoyment without sacrificing quality or taste.
The authentic Belgian waffle experience extends beyond home consumption into professional food service environments. Catering operators, food truck owners, and restaurant chefs have discovered that offering genuine Liege waffles elevates their menus with a distinctive European offering. These waffles hold up well under various serving conditions, maintaining their texture and flavor whether served warm or at room temperature. For wholesalers and food service distributors, stocking authentic Belgian waffles meets growing consumer demand for premium, internationally inspired products. The versatility of the product allows operators to feature them as breakfast items, dessert bases, or standalone snacks, appealing to customers seeking something beyond ordinary menu options.
For those who have never tasted a true Belgian waffle from the Liege region, the experience is remarkably different from what most Americans recognize as a waffle. The caramelized pearl sugar creates pockets of sweetness throughout the waffle, while the dense, yeasted dough provides a satisfying chewiness. This is not a breakfast food confined to mornings with butter and syrup, but rather an any-time treat that stands proudly on its own. Chocolate lovers particularly appreciate how the subtle sweetness of the waffle pairs beautifully with cocoa, whether through a chocolate drizzle, filled centers, or simply enjoyed alongside a warm cup of hot chocolate. The authentic Liege waffle remains a beloved European snack that has found its way into the hearts of food lovers everywhere.
